DescriptionThe message on this 1972 poster refers to the fact that the voting age for Americans had been lowered from 21 to 18 only the previous year in response to the significant activism of young Americans of diverse backgrounds and political persuasions. The Student Vote 1972 organization that issued this poster was one of many that encouraged the 10 million new young voters to register and vote in that year's presidential election. The campaign's message is presented in an informal lowercase typeface as a direct challenge to students, appropriately represented here by the new voter in the photograph with his of-the-moment hippie hairstyle and long, bushy mustache. Ultimately, however, only about half of the newly eligible youth voters turned out, and Richard Nixon was elected for a second term, defeating Democrat George McGovern in one of the largest landslide victories in U.S. history.
