DescriptionThe poster, centered on a photograph of diverse group of New Yorkers, encourages the viewer to vote yes on November 4, 1972, in support of the New York State Equal Rights Amendment, requiring the enforcement of equal rights under the law regardless of sex. After the Equal Rights Amendment was passed by Congress in 1972, it set a seven-year deadline for full ratification, based on the support of 3/4 of the states. While states like New York quickly voted to approve, state ratifications ultimately slowed to a trickle and the deadline passed. On January 27, 2022, two years after Virginia became the 38th state to ratify the E.R.A. it was argued that the Amendment could finally be certified. However, political disputes along party lines about the missed deadline and other issues mean that the archivist has not yet officially published it as the 28th Amendment to the Constitution.
