DescriptionA red, white, and blue designed based on the stars and stripes of the American flag, incorporating a hand forming the “V” symbol for Victory (and, in this case, Voting), was part of a campaign to get out the votes in the 1972 presidential election. Incumbent President Richard Nixon ultimately defeated Democratic Senator George McGovern in a landslide victory. HIPCO of Chicago, which published the poster, produced designs promoting other political and social-justice issues; in 1971, it had issued an anti-Nixon poster titled “The Devil Made Me Do It!” after the release of the Pentagon Papers, leaked documents that revealed the political machinations of a series of U.S. presidents in relation to Vietnam.On View
