DescriptionThe style of the posters for President Richard Nixon’s 1972 campaign for a second term, with the slogan “Now more than ever” was very similar to that for his successful 1968 campaign that featured the (much-mocked) slogan: Nixon’s the One!; they were mostly simple designs featuring an unadorned photograph of the smiling candidate next to the slogan. Nixon’s landslide victory over Democratic George McGovern in the 1972 election was nothing short of a miracle. The year before, Nixon’s popularity rating had fallen below 50 percent, there was increasing public protest against the Vietnam War, and inflation and unemployment were on the rise. But in the lead-up to the election, Nixon ordered Operation Linebacker (May to October, 1972), a continuous bombing effort over North Vietnam to undermine its Easter Offensive against South Vietnam; made unprecedented diplomatic trips to China and Russia; and instituted price and wage controls. He was also able to take advantage of in-fighting among Democrats and the fact that McGovern was unable to draw public attention to the connection between the Nixon administration and the June break-in to Democratic National Committee headquarters in the Watergate complex.
