DescriptionThis is a travel poster by Ludwig Hohlwein published by Hermann Sonntag & Co. of Munich featuring a woman in a traditional local costume holding the coat of arms of the town of Cottbus (incorporating a crawfish), described here as the “gateway to the Spreewald” or Spree Forest. This historic German city is situated on the River Spree about 100 kilometers southeast of Berlin in the state of Brandenberg. As in many of his travel posters of this period and later, Hohlwein has adopted a conventional, figurative style that is far removed from the avant-garde forms of his earlier work.
