DescriptionIn his view of the town of Passau in Lower Bavaria in southeastern Germany, Hohlwein layers motifs in a limited range of colors to create a sense of perspective. His image focuses on the town’s famous gothic and baroque buildings, including the cathedral of St. Stephen with its domed towers and the Fortress Veste Oberhaus. Like many of his other German travel posters, this one incorporates the town’s coat of arms, in this case, the Passau Wolf. It was also printed by Hermann Sonntag of Munich.
