DescriptionLudwig Hohlwein joined the Nazi Party in 1933 and soon began designing posters and other materials for Hitler’s new regime and other events supported by it. It is worth comparing the conventional realism of his image of a Deutsche Schäferhund (German Shepherd) here, shown standing in front of the German coat of arms, with his avant-garde designs of the prewar period. The breed was especially favored by the Nazis, not least Hitler himself, who had one as a pet, because of their obedience and their close resemblance to their wolf ancestors. This dog show in Frankfurt, held some two years into the Nazi dictatorship, was opened by Hans von Tschammer und Osten, the Riech Sports Leader, and, according to records in the Institut für Stadtgeschichte (Institute for City History) in Frankfurt, the event was accompanied by a display of antlers in the festival hall and in the surrounding fairgrounds.
