DescriptionRunning from 1965 to 1983, the BBC’s “Play of the Month” focused on single-episode adaptations of classic and contemporary theater. Originally written in 1926, On Approval is a comedy of manners in which couples “testing the waters” before committing to marriage end up exchanging partners, with happier results. Emanuel Schongut’s approach in this poster is decidedly different and more Art Deco in inspiration than his other work—suggesting the influence of Seymour Chwast’s “Roxy Style” that characterized many of his early illustrations at Push Pin.
