DescriptionCzech painter and illustrator Ludmilia Jiíincovà, known for her dreamy images of pensive-looking women, produced this soft, painterly illustration for a poster promoting a 1987 production of Dvořak’s last opera, Armida, at the National Theater in Prague. The libretto was by the Czech poet Jaroslav Vrchlický, who based it on episodes from his own translation of the epic poem Jerusalem Delivered (1581) by the Italian poet Torquato Tasso. The opera focused on the love story between Armida, the daughter of King Hydraot of Damascus, and Rinald, a knight involved in a Crusade. The opera was not well received at its world premiere in 1904 at the same theater and this 1987 production, under the conductor František Vajnar, was only the fourth to be staged since then.On View
