DescriptionIssued by the American Red Cross during World War I, this poster shows one of the relief organization’s ambulances moving across a war-ravaged landscape in the background. In the foreground, a Red Cross nurse holds an infant and comforts the despairing mother at her feet. Like many Red Cross posters of this period, it highlights a nurturing woman assisting wounded and vulnerable victims of war. Gordon Grant was a marine painter and illustrator who had worked for such publications as Harper’s Weekly and Puck. He produced illustrations for a number of posters encouraging donations to and membership of the Red Cross during and immediately after the war.On View
