DescriptionThis recruiting poster for the U.S. Air Force connects the job to the glamour of the new Space Age. In 1957, the Soviet Union had launched Sputnik, the world's first artificial satellite. The United States swiftly established the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in response and the Space Race between the two superpowers began in earnest. In May 1961, around the time this poster was produced, President Kennedy committed to landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to earth. The new Air Force recruit gazing at a rocket ship as it speeds into the night sky perhaps reflects on the hitherto unimagined realm of discovery awaiting him there. The American Bald Eagle at lower right underscores the patriotism that unites both the Space Race and service in U.S. Air Force.On View
