DescriptionFritz Erler’s design here for one of the two German war loan campaigns issued in 1917 (the sixth and seventh of nine) is characteristic of the style of his World War I posters, typically featuring a single monumental figure. In this case, the figure is a wounded German air-force gunner, his right hand wrapped in a bloody bandage; he stares directly at the viewer as if asking the question in the slogan above him: “And You?” While this poster was printed in Berlin, a variant with the same image was published by Eckstein & Stähle of Stuttgart. Posters like this one clearly had a significant impact on German civilians. While there were 1.2 million subscriptions when the first war loan was introduced in September 1914, by March 1917, there were 7.1 million subscribers to the sixth loan.On View
