DescriptionPhilips, based in the Netherlands, was one of the major manufacturers of radios, record players, televisions, and other consumer electronics during the 1950s, when the market expanded considerably throughout Europe. Its posters were printed in many different languages. This French design for a Philips television juxtaposes the set with its open interior, exposing a range of colorful wires, buttons, and dials that the general viewer might interpret as representing the latest in technological sophistication. Eric, whose name appears at the upper right of the composition, was actually Raoul Eric Castel, a French poster artist who also produced work for such travel companies as Air France in addition to numerous designs for the collaborationist Vichy regime in Nazi-occupied France during World War II.
