DescriptionThis poster, produced at the end of World War I, calls on French civilians to subscribe to the “Liberation Loan” that will finance both victory and postwar reconstruction. Maurice Romberg was a Belgian artist who had lived in Morocco and produced many paintings of local scenes there as well as watercolors of North African, French, and Belgian soldiers during World War I. This image of a heroic Algerian warrior in traditional costume riding a magnificent black stallion was issued by the Paris headquarters of the Compagnie Algérienne and appears to be based on the artist’s sketches of a similar figure. It also points to the critical role played by colonial troops during the war.
