DescriptionThis poster, in comic-book style, promotes Paris Ecologie of Paris, one of the many organizations that has emerged in France since the 1960s to address the impact of climate change. Four disgusted Santa Clauses abandon the polluted city of Paris, seen in the background, marching away past garbage cans and other detritus; joy is leaving town. By the time the poster was issued in around 1980, scientists, industrialists, and politicians around the world were well aware and well placed to take action on climate change but all signally failed. It was also at this point that French environmental action became increasingly formalized and institutionalized. In 2024, Anne Hidalgo, the city’s mayor, made significant efforts to “green” Paris in preparation for the Olympic Games and there are plans to make Paris Europe’s greenest city by 2030.
