DescriptionThis poster was issued by the organizing committee of the fourteenth Olympic Winter Games, held in Sarajevo in 1984, and promotes an exhibition of contemporary Yugolsav art presented there by the gallery Collegium Artistcum. The gallery was named after an avant-garde artistic movement that emerged during the early years of World War II and was founded in 1975. The games, not only the first held in the country but also the first time any Winter Olympic Games had ever been hosted in a socialist state, necessitated major developments in the country’s infrastructure and architecture; further, politicians were well aware of the value of culture in promoting the country at this moment when the eyes of the world were upon it. For it was also the first Olympic Games not boycotted by any country in the world. In addition to the exhibition, the Sarajevo Olympics Art Project was produced for the occasion, a print portfolio including the work of 18 major international artists, including Warhol, Hockney, and Rosenquist, inspired by the one created for the 1972 Munich Olympics. The poster, with a scribbled design that appears to be shorthand for contemporary art, was created by the hugely successful poster designer and professor of graphic design, Čedomir Kostović, early in his career. On View
