DescriptionThe Swiss-born Steinlen was a celebrated master of poster design who probably remains best known for his 1896 avant-garde posters for the bohemian Chat Noir cabaret in Paris. This design led to further poster commissions, many of them more conventional designs promoting products like Delangrenier's Racahout des Arabes ("The best food for children"), here being spooned into the mouth of a hungry infant. Racachout was a popular concoction recommended for children, invalids, and the elderly that could be consumed as a cereal or a hot drink. By the time this poster was produced, the original ground acorns in the mixture had been replaced in such commercial versions by cocoa, reflecting the new power of the cocoa industry in France. On View
