DescriptionEladio Rivadulla Martínez probably designed this poster for the Cuban release of the 1957 Chinese film Beacon Fire on Frontier, a political thriller set in post-revolutionary China, soon after Cuba’s recognition of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 1960. He based the composition very closely on that of the original poster but here the two original figures in the background of the Chinese poster have been replaced by a single figure in a headdress manning a machine gun. The film was released by the Changchun film studio, officially formed in 1955 by the Minister of Culture from several existing film companies. Like the Russian films imported to Cuba during this period, films produced by the prolific PRC film industry typically represented a shared political and cultural ideology.On View
