DescriptionThis is one from a portfolio of 91 posters titled Guerilla Girls’ Portfolio Compleat, 1985–2012. Since 1985, the Guerilla Girls, who describe themselves as “anonymous artist activists who use disruptive headlines, outrageous visuals and killer statistics to expose gender and ethnic bias and corruption in art, film, politics and pop culture,” have used street posters like this one as well as banners, actions, books, and videos in service of their cause. In public, they appear in gorilla masks both to preserve their anonymity and to shock, and in their posters they use subversive images and sophisticated wit to expose the complacency and prejudice of art-world figures and institutions.
