DescriptionThis poster was issued after the end of World War I by the Button Merchants Association of America to encourage people to buy the buttons produced by its members as part of the government’s campaign to popularize war bonds. The Victory Liberty Loan referred to here was the fifth and final issue of Liberty Bonds to fund World War I; it was introduced by the U.S. Treasury in May 1919, six months after the Armistice, to consolidate outstanding war debts. The winged figure of Victory here stands on her sword, holding the Victory Loan button in one hand as it if were an orb, and an olive branch in the other. The peaceful American landscape behind her, with a man ploughing at sunset, is the implied prize of the nation’s recent victory. Arnold Binger, a New York illustrator, was also the author of the 1903 publication Davids’ Practical Letterer: Instructions in Commercial Lettering with Brush or Pen.
