DescriptionThis poster features images of jazz legends Benny Goodman, the clarinetist and bandleader, designated the “King of Swing” by Time magazine in 1937, and Louis Armstrong, the great jazz trumpeter and vocalist. The images are set against splashes of eye-catching red and yellow and all the members of each band are listed, including Cozy Cole, whose name is misspelled here. The two bands had planned to tour together in the spring of 1953, but while, according to the venue’s records, they do appear to have played at Carnegie Hall on April 17 and 18, the two bandleaders had a falling out a few weeks into the tour and Goodman dropped out, citing ill-health. The details remain murky but it seems the tour continued without him, and Gene Krupa took over the leadership of the Goodman band until the tour finished at the end of May. It is quite possible, therefore, that Benny Goodman himself did not actually perform in the Rochester concert promoted here.On View
