DescriptionThis is one of more than one thousand posters published by the conservative Think American Institute (TAI) of Rochester New York in its Think American poster series, published weekly between 1939 and the early 1960s. The TAI was founded by a group of industrialists in 1939, led by William G. Bromley, the president of publisher Kelly-Read & Company, and its lead designer, self-taught artist Chester Raymond Miller, who was also its art director. The aim was to combat what the institute’s members saw as the subversive propaganda undermining American business, promoting American private industry in the context of traditional American values. These posters were distributed to business, financial and educational organizations across the nation. During World War II, the institute produced some three hundred posters like this one in support of the war effort, often connecting the independence of American business with the freedom of American citizens, in contrast to the subjugation of people under enemy dictators.
