DescriptionThis poster, showing a military medic administering a blood transfusion to a wounded man on the battlefield under heavy fire, urges civilians to donate blood for the war effort. At one point Meade Schaeffer, who graduated in 1920 from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, was the highest paid illustrator in the world, producing images for magazines like McCall’s and The Woman’s Home Companion as well as illustrating classic novels published by Dodd, Mead & Co. of New York. Soon after the United States entered World War II, Schaeffer and his friend Norman Rockwell were commissioned by Ben Hibbs of The Saturday Evening Post to make cover paintings for the magazine. Schaeffer, who traveled as a war correspondent between 1942 and 1944, ultimately produced 16 covers for the Post during the war, including the one here, and became known for his authentic and detailed representations of the realities of military life.On View
