DescriptionThis poster is one of a number of commissions German graphic designer Ludwig Hohlwein received from Swiss stores, especially those selling clothing and shoes, early in his career. This is one of three he designed for the luxury men's clothing firm of Burger-Kehl & Co. PKZ (Paul Kehl Zürich, named in 1881 for the founder) from 1908. The image of the dapper man dressed in a pale day suit as he walks his dog reflects Hohlwein’s early adoption of the minimal forms and restricted color palette of the Sachplakat (object poster) style. It also hints at the kind of idiosyncratic details that were to distinguish his work and establish his reputation: the man appears in a curious pose and is also wearing heeled evening pumps of a kind associated with men’s evening dress during this period.
