DescriptionThis poster was one of at least three advertising posters designed by Leonetto Cappiello for Dr. Rasurel’s hygienic undergarments; the others, however, were produced before World War I, while Cappiello designed this one after he had signed an exclusive contract with Devambez printers in 1921. The eccentric-looking doctor himself is seen here displaying some of his wares, and the boldly colorful and humorous composition reflects the artist’s idiosyncratic artistic sensibility. The Dr. Rausel brand was founded in 1884 by Louis Neyron and Dr. Rasurel in response to a new understanding of the role of personal cleanliness to health and to the dress-reform movement of the time. The many magazine advertisements and posters for Dr. Rasurel’s products, made of wool and peat fibers, tout their health-giving properties; they were even supplied by the French army to its soldiers in the trenches during World War 1.
