DescriptionFollowing the uprising and subsequent lethal crackdown by authorities that took place at the Attica Correctional Facility in Attica, New York, from September 9–13, 1971, “Attica Brothers” quickly became shorthand for the multiracial coalition of incarcerated men who had led the prison uprising and who had paid a physical and legal price for their transgressions.“Support the Attica Brothers” was a phrase—almost a mantra— that appeared repeatedly in publications and on a range of commemorative objects in the aftermath of the attack. It served to reaffirm the unity and camaraderie of the prisoners who had briefly taken control of the prison yard and the sympathetic solidarity of many outside observers. This vivid illustration, published by the Attica Defense Committee in Buffalo, New York, centers on a well-known press photograph of inmates giving the Black Power salute in the yard during the negotiations on September 10, 1971. The image of a raised fist has since become synonymous with antiestablishment and Black liberation movements.On View
