DescriptionThis poster was designed for the Cuban release of the most internationally successful Czech film of all time, originally titled Vynález Zkázy (Invention of Doom). Directed by Karel Zeman, it was adapted from an 1896 novel by the French writer Jules Verne called Facing the Flag; it tells the story of a scientist and his doomsday machine, and the pirates who attempt to capture it against all the odds. Eladio Rivadulla Martínez was a revered Cuban graphic designer who introduced silkscreen to movie posters in Cuba from 1943, producing them in his own studio in Havana; he is also credited with designing and printing the first poster on the Cuban Revolution in January 1959. In this composition, he uses muted tones and background lines suggesting engraving to capture something of the extraordinary visual quality of this black-and-white film, featuring animated scenery based on Victorian engraved illustrations.On View
