DescriptionIn this National Safety Council (NSC) poster, Uncle Sam is not deployed to recruit new soldiers, as he had been in James Montgomery Flagg's famous World War I poster in which he pointed at the viewer and proclaimed (ungrammatically): "I Want You for U.S. Army." His job here is to assert the importance of workplace safety. This is a relaxed-looking Uncle Sam in the guise of a friendly factory foreman, with rolled-up shirtsleeves and a vest decorated with the stars of the American flag, apparently reassuring a new munitions worker. Ralph Moses designed numerous posters for the NSC, both before and during World War II.On View
