DescriptionThe poster advertises the Associated Printers of Madras, founded in 1950 and still in operation in Chennai today. Madras had been a center of printing in India under the British colonial regime, during which a number of printing presses were set up by the East India Company; a design school, associated with the Government School of Design established in London in 1837, was also founded there in 1850 with the aim of enhancing design education. In 1947, after Independence, Indian artists and designers sought to establish their own identity and authentic work. This poster reflects a traditional Indian figurative style executed in vivid colors and advertises the company's poster-printing service. The regional modernism of the Madras Art Movement emerged later in the decade.On View
