DescriptionThe Y.W.C.A. was the only women’s organization among the seven participants in the United War Work Campaign officially introduced by the federal government on the day of the Armistice, November 11, 1918, and the only one entirely dedicated to serving women. In addition to helping female workers in war industries and providing “Hostess Houses” for wives and mothers visiting relatives in training camps, they also assisted American servicewomen abroad and French women in armaments factories like the ones seen working at a forge in this poster. Through the window behind them a crowd of women swarms the Y.M.C.A. center lettered “Foyer des Alliées” (Home of the Allies) and decorated with French and American flags. This is one of several posters made by French artist Lucien Jonas, most of them promoting war bonds.
