DescriptionDuring the final year of World War I, the banks that administered French war loans intensified their poster campaigns. French artist D.B. Chavannaz seems to have been in big demand; among many other financial institutions, he was commissioned by Cox & Co, an army banking firm that had been established in London in 1758 and opened a Paris branch in 1915, to design posters to this end. This one probably promotes the third government war loan, issued in April 1918 (there was a fourth in September); it shows French and British soldiers sitting on a French tank as they watch explosions in the distance. A small golden figure of Victory with her laurel wreath is set on the tank’s turret, reinforcing the notion that Allied victory is imminent.
