DescriptionThis Latvian poster from the 1930s advertises a men’s clothing brand called “Jockey Club.” The sharply dressed man in the illustration is intended to evoke the patrician clothing of the upper-class members of the Jockey Club, a horse-racing organization founded in Britain in the 18th century. Latvia was not incorporated into the Soviet Union until 1940; during the mid-1930s, after the Depression, the country experienced a period of economic growth that was particularly evident in the modernization of the capital city of Riga where luxury goods like these became available to those who could afford them.
